Advisory for Hoax Calls
The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has received several reports from a number of subscribers have recently been receiving calls from an unverified number claiming to be from various Government agencies or businesses.
Scammers often use number spoofing, where they mask real phone numbers when calling potential victims. These calls are a form of fraudulent activity with the goal of stealing your money or information and can often be from a number that seems to be legitimate.
As part of AITI’s efforts to protect consumers, subscribers are advised to:
- Always be extra cautious when answering calls from unfamiliar local or international numbers, particularly when you’re not expecting any calls.
- Never give your personal or financial details over the phone. Don’t provide any personal information for example identification number, bank account number and etc.
- Be careful with following instructions given on a suspicious calls, e.g. “Press 1”;
- Get details of the caller, hang up the call immediately and call back to the Government agencies’ or business’s official number to validate the call received.
