World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is celebrated annually on May 17, to mark the founding of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in 1865 when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris, France. The purpose of WTISD is to raise awareness on the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other ICTs can bring to societies and economies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide.

This year is the 52nd anniversary of WTISD since its first celebration in 1969. The theme for this year is "Accelerating Digital Transformation in Challenging Times", which reflects the key role of information and communication technologies (ICTs), but also the startling digital inequalities between and within countries.

In conjunction with WTISD celebration, AITI is organising an Instagram photo contest which is opened to all residents of Brunei Darussalam with a minimum age of 15 years old.  The closing date for submission of the entries is Monday, 31 May 2021.  For more information about the contest, interested participants can check it out at www.aiti.gov.bn.
