TYPE APPROVAL

 

Under Section 9 of Telecommunications Order, 2001, it states that any equipment to be used for connection to any telecommunications system or equipment belonging to a telecommunication licensee shall be approved by AITI before use.

Any equipment that is not approved will be exported back to country of origin by the importer..

CATEGORIES OF TYPE APPROVAL

There are 2 categories of Type Approval:     

(a)  Personal Type Approval

This is needed for importation of equipment for own use i.e. not for resale.  Individuals, sole proprietorship, partnerships and companies can apply for Personal Type Approval provided that the importation is not for resale.

(b)  Dealer Type Approval

This is needed for importation of equipment for resale.  Applicants must hold a valid Dealer Licence issued by AITI.  Dealer Licence holders must apply for Dealer Type Approval before importation of the equipment.
Applications are based on the model of the equipment to be imported.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRING TYPE APPROVAL

 

AITI defines three levels of equipment.  Each level has specific requirements for showing compliance with relevant standards and is based on the risk of interference that may be expected from a particular piece of telecommunications equipment.

1)	Level 1 applies to devices whose non-compliance would have a low risk of causing interference to other devices using the radio frequency spectrum and the telecommunications network.
2)	Level 2 applies to devices whose non-compliance would have a moderate risk of causing interference to other devices using the radio frequency spectrum and the telecommunications network.
3)	Level 3 applies to devices whose non-compliance would have a high risk of causing interference to other devices using the radiofrequency spectrum and telecommunications network or adverse consequences to personal safety.

This list should not be considered exhaustive.  AITI reserves the right to make changes to the list below.

DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must complete the application form and submit it to AITI together with the following documents:

 

* Applicant can also provide Certificate of conformity from Infocomm Development Authority (iDA) or SIRIM QAS Malaysia.

PROCESS DURATION

Application form will only be processed upon submission of complete applications forms with signature together with required documents and payment of the fees.

Verification and technical evaluation will be completed within 7 working days except for Level 1 equipment which will be processed immediately provided that it complies with AITI technical specification.

DEALER TYPE APPROVAL FEES

Dealer Type Approval Fees range from B$100 to B$250 and Dealer Type Approval Certificate is valid for 5 years from date of issue.

PERSONAL TYPE APPROVAL FEES

Personal Type Approval Fees are calculated on the number of items imported.

1)	Type approval of the first unit is charged at B$50 and B$300 each for subsequent units of the same item for satellite phones, amateur radio sets, radio modem. </span></li>
2)	Type approval of the first 5 units is charged at B$50 and B$300 each for subsequent units of the same item for Modem, PABX, Marine radio, Remote control TX for car.
3)	Type approval of the mobile phone and standard telephone will not be charged up to 2 units. Subsequent units will be charged at $50 each.
