Dealer Licence
1. Who should apply for dealer licences and how many types are there?
Any local company or organization that imports, supplies, sells and resells telecommunication, radiocommunication and satellite equipment must apply for a dealer’s licence.
Foreign companies are also required to apply for a dealer’s licence. However, prior to applying for a dealer’s licence, the foreign company must be a partner to a local company or a joint venture with a local company.

3. How long will the application process take?
The length of the process is dependent on the type of dealer’s licence which is being applied for:
Applications for a DTQ licence will be processed within 5 working days.*
Applications for a DRQ licence will be processed within 30 working days *
Applications for a DSQ licence, will be processed within 60 working days subject to all necessary approvals received from Broadcasting Unit, Ministry of Communications.
Before any approval is granted, AITI will conduct a site inspection of the applicant’s office/shop to ensure the applicant has met the requirements such as mounting shop label, technicians, etc. Approval shall be granted once every requirement is met.
*The above mentioned licences will be processed upon a satisfactory site inspection.
4. What is the validity of this licence?
A dealer’s licence is valid for a period of one (1) year.
Equipment Type Approval & Importation
5 . Which equipments require type approval from AITI?
AITI type approves telecommunication, radiocommunication and satellite equipments to be sold and used in Brunei Darussalam.
There are 2 categories for type approval certification:
Dealer Type Approval certificates are valid for a period of five (5) years.
Personal Type Approval certificates have no validity.

7. How long does it take to process an application for a type approval (certification)?
For Level 1, it will only take one (1) day. While for Level 2 and 3, the type approval process takes approximately seven (7) working days upon complete submission of required documents.

9. Is it necessary to have a Dealer’s Licence before applying for a Type Approval?
Yes, before a dealer type approval can be process a dealer licence must first be obtained. A dealer who acquire this license will not necessarily apply for a Dealer’s Type Approval. A dealer’s licence is not required prior to applying for a Personal Type Approval.

11. Is it necessary to inform AITI on any changes to an approved equipment?
Yes, it is necessary regardless of any minor changes done that might not effect previous declaration/result/certificate.
12. What is the process for renewing Type Approval certificates? What documents are required?
All Type Approval certificates are renewable every 5 years.
For level 2 and 3 equipment, no documents are required but an applicant must fill in a new application form. Renewals must be done at least 2 months prior to the expiry date of the Type Approval certificate, if this is not done, applicants must now submit as a new application. However for level 1 equipment registration certificate, the applicant would be required to fill and submit as a new application.
13. Can a Dealer Type Approval be issued to a representative/reseller in Brunei Darussalam?
Yes, as long as the representative/reseller holds a valid AITI Dealer licence.
14. Does the Dealer Type Approval applicant require to apply for a SeTi/InTi licence prior to applying for type approval for a dealer?
No, a SeTi/InTi licence is not required when applying for dealer type approval.

17. Do WIFI routers, safety and Electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) equipment require type approval from AITI?
Yes, WIFI routers require type approval because it is categorized under radio-communications equipment whereas safety and EMC equipment are part of the requirements to be met before it can be approved.
18. Are overseas manufacturers allowed to possess the Type Approval certificate?
No, overseas manufacturers are not allowed to possess a type-approval certificate. However their equipment can be type approved registered brand/model under a local dealer/representative.
19. Are computer desktops and laptops required to be type-approved?
Computer desktops are not required for type approval, but their devices such as built-in modem, bluetooth and wifi are required to be type approved.
Laptops require type approval because they have wireless features and are categorized under radio-communications and telecommunications equipment.
20. Is the submission of an equipment sample necessary for a type approval application?
A submission of a sample is not a necessary however it will normally be depend on a case by case basis.
21. What are the requirements foreign companies must fulfill when importing equipments into Brunei for demonstration purposes?
They are required to submit, in writing, the itemized list of equipments to be imported, together with the relevant supporting government or agencies letterhead for confirmation of the mentioned demonstration.
Operating Licence
22. What is an operating licence?
An operating licence, also known as station licence, is for the operating of any radiocommunication and satellite equipment.

24. How do I apply for an Amateur Radio Licence in Brunei for foreigners?
The applicant must fill in and submit the completed application form together with existing amateur radio licence (from the country of origin) and copy of passport. The applicant must also have a local guarantor.
25. How does a foreigner apply for temporary and permanent Radio station licence in Brunei?
For temporary radio station licence, the applicant can approach the local service provider for the station licence.
For permanent radio station licence, they must have a local certified entity. The local entity must submit in written company’s letterhead on the application to AITI for the approval.
26. What kind of documents is required when applying for Maritime Station?
The required documents are as follow:

27. For Maritime station, when can the applicant get their callsign and MMSI number?
They will receive it after the issuance of their station licence.
28. For amateur radio license, how can new operators apply for it?
AITI has categorises amateur radio into two (2); Standard and Advance Class Amateur Radio Station License.
Under standard class license, new operators must register by filing up the application form, and submitting together a copy of their identity card to AITI. Once this process is done the applicant will now have to wait for an advert informing future examination payment date. Applicant will now have to sit and pass this examination. Later they would have to submit the examination slip for an amateur radio station licence with a purchase receipt /or a radio that have been approved for used in Brunei.
For the Advanced Class Licence, for those who wants to upgrade from Standard Class and have obtain existing Standard Class License holders issued before June 2007, they have to sit for, and pass the AMR examination.
For new Standard Class Amateur Radio License holder issued after June 2007, they can apply to Advance Class License subject to:-
Licensee are required to submit their amateur radio logbook for the previous 6 (six) months.
29. Why is the standard licence only allowed to transmit in defined bands while advanced are allowed to use all?
The standard licence band only allowed to transmit and receive in the VHF frequency band in the range of 144.000 MHz to 148.000 MHz. This band is intended for the use within Brunei Darussalam and not internationally.
AITI have locate 144.000MHz-148.000MHz to be used for transmitting and receiving in the VHF frequency band. Other frequencies have been intended and allocated for different usage.
To transmit in other amateur frequencies, advanced licence can cover certain amateur radio frequency which is capable to communicate outside of Brunei Darussalam.
