The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) hosted the 20th Frequency Assignment Committee, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei (FACSMAB) Review meeting on 3rd May 2019 at the Empire Hotel and Country Club, Brunei Darussalam. The meeting was chaired by Pg Haji Mohd Zain bin Pg Hj Abdul Razak, Chief Executive of AITI and was attended by Yang Berbahagia Dato' Mohd Ali Hanafiah bin Mohd Yunus, Chief Officer, Corporate Sector of Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Ms. Aileen Chia, Director- General of Telecoms and Post of Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA).
The meeting targets to manage coordination of radio frequency assignments within the region bounded by the three countries. 5G has become the main highlighted agenda discussed in the meeting. Among the matters discussed were to align and prepare for the radio frequency band in 3.5GHz and "the millimeter wave" allocation for 5G deployment, in line with the Constitution and Convention of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Development amongst the three countries are also shared in the meeting whereby AITI updated on the outcome of their desktop study on band segmentation for co-existence between International Mobile Technology (IMT) and satellite services in 3.5GHz frequency band. In Malaysia, a 5G Task Force has been established in November 2018 which aims to study requirements and applicable business cases of 5G which is expected to be completed by September 2019. In Singapore, 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands are among the highly popular bands for 5G Trial.
The next FACSMAB Review Meeting will be hosted by Singapore in 2020.
